The Wellness Lounge is an online loving space where women who are struggling with anxiety and depression can go to get judgement-free advice, hope, and encouragement on their own journeys.

I’m Amanda Henry, and I'm on a mission to destigmatize mental illness.

I suffered from anxiety and depression for over 19 years. I’m not a doctor, therapist, psychologist, or a psychiatrist – just a normal girl who went on a long journey to true health and happiness.

While I advocate for a holistic approach to health and happiness, I never want to deter someone from traditional medicine or therapy if that is what’s right for you. Like I said, I’m not a doctor, so take everything with a grain of salt.

What I am, by trade, is an engineer. No, I’m not a happiness engineer, but I sure like to think of myself that way. Once I realized that traditional therapy and drugs weren’t going to be the cure I was truly searching for, I began to engineer my own treatment.

I researched more than I probably did during college. I tried every. single. diet. under the sun (just ask my husband.) I became my own human guinea pig, and tried every odd remedy I read and could verify in more than once place (OK, and probably a lot more that were never verified too. Can you blame me?) I was on a mission to figure out WHAT THE HECK WAS WRONG WITH ME.

I was seriously OVER IT. Over being on medicine, over feeling like garbage, over being sad, anxious, or scared for no good reason. I stepped back and looked at my life from the outside looking in, and it made NO SENSE.

I finally started to take a more holistic approach. It was amazing to me that I went to therapy for over 15 years and not a single doctor ever asked me what my diet looked like, or how much I exercised, or how my relationships were. It really was baffling to me that instead of changing the food I was eating, the answer was to just slap a prescription on it.

Over the course of about 5 years, I became more aware of what I was eating, and how it affected my mood. I finally enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to learn even more, and I couldn’t have been happier with my time there. I have learned so much about how food truly is the gateway to happiness. The food we eat changes EVERYTHING - from how you feel 5 minutes after you eat it, to truly changing how your genes are expressed – it really is amazing.

My goal here is to share my story, my experiences, and things that have worked for me along the way. I hope to inspire you to become your own test subjects and start taking your health into your own hands. No amount of talk therapy or drugs is going to solve your problems if you aren’t willing to take an active part in your recovery. You can douse a plant in fertilizer, flood it with water, and give it the best soil, but if that plant is in your basement and it never sees the sun, it surely won’t grow. The same is true for your health – every component must be aligned - and often the part everyone overlooks is YOUR active part in YOUR own recovery. You are the link to it all.
